Japanese term

保証人

hoshōnin

Meaning

A guarantor — a person who accepts legal responsibility for a tenant's obligations, such as unpaid rent, if the tenant does not pay. A joint guarantor (連帯保証人) can be asked to pay without the landlord first pursuing the tenant. Many landlords instead require a guarantor company (保証会社).

In a sentence

Because he had no 保証人 in Japan, the agency proposed a guarantor company instead.
